Modern life in a modern metropolis is very stressful. The reasons are myriad but one good example is work. When working, an average person encounters difficulties along way, from traffic to pesky coworkers to physical discomforts.
Much as we would like to contest the capitalistic way of life, we seldom question the results. After all, working 8 hours a day five times a week puts food on the table and gives us the assurance of having something worthwhile to do. Imagine what our lives would be if we didn’t have to work. Like they say, idleness is the devil’s workshop. Unfortunately, the grind of daily life has its hazards. Sleep, for one, is something we usually take for granted. If we can’t fit our lifestyle and our schedules in a day, guess what we sacrifice immediately. Otherwise, you wouldn’t see employees, especially those coming from far-off suburbs, making good use of lunch breaks to take not just meals but quick nap as well. Commuting, whether driving a vehicle or riding in public transportation, is another matter. Traffic in the cities seems to get worse every passing year, and nothing is more stressful than being stuck in traffic when everybody else in the office is already there. Add in some weather-related problems like a sudden storm, or an unbearable heat wave with the airconditioner down, and you have the makings of a potential amok coming in the office late drenched in either sweat or rainwater. Bosses should reconsider bearting this employee if ever. Work has its usual stress. Marathon meetings, missed deadlines, distractive co-workers, and technical problems contribute to a few gray hairs. Even something as trivial as a missing ballpoint in your table is sometimes enough to keep you from working for half a day, electing instead to deliver a speech against stealing to whoever is listening. After punching in your 8-hour day, battle it out again on the roads on the way home. By the time you get home to your dinner and family, you really don’t feel like talking, and everybody gets ready to sleep and repeat the same routine. You probably sigh as you close your eyes as you mutter. Come Friday, you get a second wind and seem to enjoy your day more than usual. Weekends are then spent comfortably inside the house or outside, unless of course you have a second job or it’s time to have the house cleaned or remodeled. According to experts from different fields in over 100 countries, who met and shared ideas on a wide range of topics, stress is an abnormal body condition that affects its normal functioning. Of course, stress affects people in different ways but the fact remains: stress is there. Symptoms of stressed body includes: abdominal pain, overall restlessness, irritable bowel movement, diarrhea, mild headache, constipation, and bouts of insomnia.
