Can Our Skin Also Get Stressed?
Going to your dermatologist should be made an important task as a visit to the dentist. Our skin, after all, is what we put upfront when meeting people. A overstressed skin is never good and we should do everything we can to rejuvenate it.

The answer that question is YES! Since our skin is a vital organ of our body and that stress is a bodily condition, it is only logical that the skin can also be subjected to stress.

The skin is the largest organ of the body. It plays an important role in the protection, sensation, heat regulation, secretion, excretion, and respiration of the body. And with the daily exposure of the skin to a countless variety of hazardous substances, the skin can also experience stress. Skin stress is manifested in various skin conditions that we are very familiar with.

During one of my visits to my dermatologist, I asked her about skin care and its importance in preventing skin stress.

Q: How important is skin care?

A: Taking good care of one’s skin is not only for aesthetic purposes. Although it may be pleasing to see someone with flawless complexion, the skin, being the protective layer of our body, should be viewed as the mirror of one’s health. It serves as an important mirrior or many internal disorders that do no actively involve the skin but are simply manifested on it. So, we can say that a goods skin is but a reflection of good health.

Q: What are the common skin problems?

A: Acne has been a perennial problem to almost all people, regardless of age. Skin infections are also common, mainly due to dirt and harmful chemicals applied to the face. Then there are also patients seeking relief from fungal infections. Bacterial infections and skin allergies are also relatively common.

Q: At what age should a person start visiting a dermatologist and how often should it be?

A: It really depends. What is important is that as soon as you have a skin problem, professional help should be sought. In the case of acne problems, clients, even in their pre-adolescent years, have already been visiting skin clinics.  They seem to be very conscious with having good skin and that is why they have become aware of the importance of seeking help of a dermatologist for their acne problems.

Q: With the mushrooming of skin clinics everywhere, what should a person consider in choosing the best one?

A: The awareness of skin care among us has resulted to the increase in number of skin and facial clinics, which we now even find in malls for convenience. But what is important in choosing were to go is to know the academic background of the dermatologist you are visiting for professional help.

Your doctor must be fully equipped with the academic and professional training necessary and must be accredited and board certified, because if they he/she is not, then what may initially be a simple skin problem could become a more serious one. Without any prejudice to those found in mall an din cases of serious skin problems, going to the hospital-based clinics should be preferred since hospitals do not accept doctors who are not board certified or do not possess sufficient academic and training experience. So, with these doctors connected to hospitals, you are assured that they are really qualified.
