What to Do If You Want to Quit Smoking
Know the first steps of the quit-smoking-process, from accepting the fact that you’re addicted to the importance of taking it day by day.

Any addiction that a person comes to experience is certainly not something that is easy to get rid of. Whether it is nicotine, alcohol or drugs that you crave – the end is always the same: you have to quit unless you want to ruin your life.

The first step to quitting anything is acknowledging the fact that you are truly addicted. It’s impossible to help anyone who refuses to acknowledge their addiction and in this case, that would be smoking. For you to quit smoking, you truly have to accept that you’re addicted to it. What does being addicted pertains to? It means that you’d risk anything just to smoke, even your health, your career and your relationships with other people.

That’s what addiction is and it’s a good thing that you’re willing to quit smoking now.

The second step to take when you want to quit smoking is to accept that you need help. People who believe that they do not need any help AT ALL to quit smoking are only deceiving themselves. Why do you think there’s a saying that “no man is an island”? You may feel that you’re strong enough to quit smoking by yourself now but after a week or a month at the most, if you don’t acknowledge the truth, you’re doomed to fail in reaching your objective.

Now that you know that you need help to quit smoking, the next thing to do is to find someone who has the same objectives as you do. It would always be better if someone close to you has the same problem and is also willing to quit but if you don’t, there are always help groups to join, with objectives similar to Alcoholics Anonymous, but in this case with smoking as the focal point.

And even if you don’t know anyone with the same problem as you do, it’s always important to know and feel that your loved ones are there to support you all the way.

The next step to do is to set a date to quit smoking. If you decide to quit smoking starting tomorrow then make sure that you don’t break your promise to yourself. Keeping your word shall prove to everyone and more importantly to yourself that you’re serious about your objective.

Get rid of everything that has to do with smoking and start keeping everything that has to do with quitting smoking. Ash trays, cigarette boxes – everything that is connected to nicotine must be thrown away.

And lastly, just take it day by day. Don’t pressure yourself. Each day you don’t smoke is one day’s worth of work in prolonging your life.
