Want to Quit Smoking? Here's How
You need to quit smoking. It is one of the most important things you can do to change an unhealthy lifestyle choice and turn it around on the step to a better and more fruitful life. This article shows you some good tips to help make that possible.

Quitting smoking requires a lot of hard work and effort.  Below are some reasons why stopping is good.

Good Reasons for Quitting

• Living will be longer and better.

• Chances of acquiring diseases such as heart attack, stroke, or cancer will be lessened.

• For pregnant women, having a healthy baby is most likely.

• Health of the people with whom you live with will be guaranteed. Money will be spent on other things aside from cigarette.

Five Keys for Quitting

1. Get Ready

• Set a date on which to quit.

• Have a change of environment.  Remove cigarettes and ashtrays at home, automobile and office.  Shun people smoking at home.

• Look on previous attempts to quit.  Find out which attempt worked and which did not.

• Don’t think of smoking when you have already quit.

2. Get Support and Encouragement

Success would be assured if support would be solicited :

• Inform family, friends and officemates about your intention to stop smoking.  Request them to avoid smoking or leave cigarette butts.

• Consult your health care provider.

• Attend individual, group or phone counseling. Quitting is more likely if counseling will be obtained.  Health centers as well as local hospitals provide quit smoking programs. Get in touch with the health department for program details.

3. Learn New Skills and Behaviors

• Keep away from smoking urges.  Chat with a person, take a walk or do something.

• Initial attempts in quitting may require changing usual routine.  Take another route in going to work.  Instead of coffee, try drinking tea.  Have breakfast at a different location.

• Try something to lessen stress.

• Indulge in enjoyable daily activities.

• Drink a lot of water and other fluids.

4. Get Medication and Use It Correctly
Stopping smoking and the urge to smoke can be lessened by taking medicines.  Medications can offer several benefits.  Pregnant women or those expecting pregnancy, people less than 18, nursing or smoking less than ten cigarettes daily or have a medical history must consult the doctor or other health care provider prior to undergoing medications.

5. Be Prepared for Relapse or Difficult Situations

After quitting, most relapses may happen during the first trimester.  Do not lose hope when this happens.  Keep in mind that many people take several attempts before finally stopping the habit.

The help of a doctor or other health care provider may be needed if problems are encountered.
