How Smoking Influences The Mind
Smoking becomes addictive not because of the nicotine substance. It has been said that smoking becomes addictve because of the way we do things. Here are some studies that proves that point.

Cigarette smoking is one of the things that have been killing a lot of people year in and year out. This is because the complications that arise from cigarette smoking are so abundant. The complications could be simply bad breathe or to the more lethal ones like cancer.

What makes cigarette smoking so addictive anyway? Is it the nicotine substance? Recent studies have found out that nicotine has only been the scapegoat for the cigarette smoking addiction. In fact sugar is more addictive.

People who become addicted to cigarette smoking are really the result of their own subconscious mind. After trying to smoke for a few puffs, eventually the person enjoys the feeling. The person will then have a force of habit to just smoke. Eventually leading to everything he thinks about is to just smoke.

There are studies however made by Ivan Pavlov that shows how cigarettes trigger a person to smoke. He made a study with dogs that every time he rang the bell there would be food involved. The dogs would then salivate when seeing the food. Eventually, he removed the food in the experiment when he rang the bell. The dogs would still salivate. This is because the dogs associated the bell with food. He called this reaction “conditioned response”.

Conditioned response also explains why a person seems to smoke a lot doing simple things. If you smoke a lot of cigarettes a day, the simple things you do becomes associated with smoking. I.e., you smoke during your lunch break every day. Eventually, when you eat out or have a break, your mind will think that you need a smoke.

This is also the situation when you smoke before you sleep or when you wake up. You will eventually wake up in the middle of the night just to get that smoke.

Another study has also associated how a person forms habits. An action, whether good or bad but is eventually rewarded will eventually be repeated. If the deed is punished, it will be avoided.

Based on those observations here is how it relates to smokers. The soothing and relaxing feeling that smoke gives might make the smoker feel rewarded. It becomes a way for the person to release stress. Close company with other smokers may also make them believe that they grow their social circle. They become more accepted.

Smokers who try to quit will have a hard time doing so because of the concept of punishment. When they quit smoking, they suffer from bad moods, irresistible urges and cravings.

Understanding these concepts makes it easier to know why quitting is hard to do for those who try.
