What makes cigarette smoking so addictive to some? Is it the nicotine substance? Read this article and you'll be surprised it's not the nicotine.
Addiction is a word that has been used for an event, situation, or thing we can not stop doing over and over again. A person could be addicted to good things or to bad things. You could either be too addicted watching Dr. Phil or you could be addicted to the bad stuff like drugs or alcohol. One of the bad things to get hooked on is cigarette smoke. As seen on those cigarette commercials, they always say that cigarette smoking is dangerous for one’s health. Especially if smoking in your life has become too prevalent. That you are not able to think straight for a second without smoking, you may have problems. What makes cigarette smoking so addictive anyway? Some say the addictive substance in cigarettes is the nicotine. The nicotine can be able to make the user feel like he or she needs to smoke more. However based on recent studies, the effect of nicotine as an addictive substance on the brain is only the same as sugar, exercise, salt, and other things we may be addicted too. Another observation has been done and states that smoking is usually done doing something else. Talk about multi-tasking. This shows that the nicotine on the cigarette does influence the person to act based on the additive substance of the nicotine. In fact sugar is more addictive than nicotine. The problem with people who smoke rampantly is that they may just be doing this subconsciously or became a force of habit. If you don’t believe me, ask yourself this question. What suddenly comes to your mind when you are eating food, drinking beer or coffee and even just taking a break? If you have answered smoking, then your actions is what has been triggering you to smoke more. If you just answered, drinking coffee or eating food but still want to smoke. I no longer have an answer. The worse thing that could happen is that when you continually smoke subconsciously, other actions you may do will be greatly affected. You may have to wake up in the middle of the night just to smoke. You may be breaking out in a cold sweat during a lengthy lecture just to get that puff. You may even end up in a seizure when you forget to smoke after being so engrossed in the movie or book you are reading. However, that may only be the worse case scenarios; because in reality, it will rarely happen. When your mind is preoccupied with something else, it’s pretty sure you’ll be forgetting about puffing a smoke. |
